Post subject:  Hobie 16 identification

Ive just purchased a used Hobie 16 that I am trying to figure the age of. Can anyone give me a guess based on the hull decals?

Also, on the transoms there is a serial number, but it isnt in the usual style. Both transoms have been engraved with BI2844. Does this mean anything to anyone?

The hull decals are non-standard. From the serial number you provided, I'm guessing that the hulls are '84, but everything else is new(ish).

Integrated traveler tracks in the crossbeams came in '95. Jib halyard cleat / turning block on the front of the mast came in '04. Sail number is from '10 (ish). The boat is definitely set up for racing.

Someone may have taken a set of light hulls from '84 and combined them with a more recent platform to create a killer racing machine. Or not.

The serial number you quoted makes little sense, other than the "B", which would be the model letter of a Hobie 16.

Try Hobie Australasia... www.hobiecat.com.au

I'd guess the B is from Bashford Boats when they were building Hobie Cats. That would place the age ... older than 1990's
