Post subject:  1980's Hobie 16 - Good Deal? - New Question

I am currently in the process of for a used Hobie 16 that I can use to sail and possibly race (Probably not). I have found this one that the seller says has all the rigging and he sailed it earlier this season. He doesn't know too much about Hobie cats so I am wondering if this is a good deal or not.

Also I will just mention my total budget for getting a sailing ready boat is $1,500.

The seller claims the following:
- He has 2 sets of sails
- I have pictures of one of the sets
- All rigging is in place and ready to be used
- May or may not have trapeze wires
- No rips or tears in the sails

You can see some pictures on the craigslist ad: http://delaware.craigslist.org/boa/4673081725.html

Here are the sail pictures: http://i.imgur.com/UfYBTRS.jpg, http://i.imgur.com/MwEDgRW.jpg

I know to look for soft spots and to thoroughly examine the boat when looking at it.

So is this a good deal? Should I meet the person to see the boat? And lastly what should I pay for this boat?

The pix aren't that great, but it appears to be a relatively clean boat circa early 80's. Definitely worth a look, but in my opinion, $1500 is a little steep. At the very least, should you purchase, figure on a new tramp (the colored ones can get pretty brittle, and that orange is likely original) and new standing rigging. If you plan on racing, hold out for a newer boat!

talk him down. 1500 is too much for that boat. you can find better deals, if he doesnt deal. go look at it.

What should I look to spend for it? I have already messaged him a few times and he would be comfortable with $1,000. Would that be a fair price?
