I have a Hobie comp tip cover, but would like to make a cover for the rest of the mast.

What material would I use. Also, any suggestion where to buy the material online?

I would use sunbrella fabric which holds up very well outdoors. I think it has something like a 10 year guarantee. Both sailrite.com and seattlefabrics.com sell this material and I'm sure there are plenty of other sites that do as well. Be sure you include a drain hole in the end of the cover so it doesn't fill with water.

Ebay end-pieces have worked for me as well. Search "sunbrella" and the color or length in yards you want. Just pay attention to the width, they do vary, you could make a short piece go long way for a mast cover.

Standard width for new material is 56" (some is 60")

For a mast cover (without seams), you're looking at 10 yds - which @ $20+ per yard is getting expensive - and you'd have a lot left over. Probably enough to make two more covers.

The nice thing about Sailrite is you can order everything you need - material, thread, zippers and reinforcing material (needed at the ends and at the tie-down points if you're going to trailer with it) at one place.

You guys need to take some sewing lessons here or there . There is nothing wrong in a few seams in the sunbrella my free advise is to measure the circumference around the mast add about 3 inches and you are basically constructing a cloth tube. The material is always measured in the running yard 36 inches you could go with the 80 inches wide to cut down on a few seams i guess. The sunbrella surlast fabric is a lot cheaper however even using regular sunbrella it should be pretty cheap and easy. Also I buy all my Sunbrella at Textile Specialists on E bay I like the black fabric Sunbrella

The wife just made 3 hobie sailbags from Real Sunbrella and will say they are better than any sailbag i have ever got on any factory hobie cat sailbag. Sorry Hobie Matt because Hobie Factory parts are usually the BOMB

Free advice for what that is worth

Hi DavidBell,,
Those are beautiful!!

Please help me out though, I see the rudder covers, a sail bag, a mast bag, and I assume a boom bag. Why is there the wide section in the boom bag?

I'm guessing that's a spinnaker pole bag.

Oh, yeah!!

Thanks Matt, now that you say it, it is obvious.

I don't have a spinnaker yet, so never even considered it.

Happy New Year, by the way.

I can't wait until the water gets soft around here again...

Hey Steve, Matt.... It's been a while !!! Actually, I made these before I even had a spinnaker. You're right Steve....it's a boom bag. When I made this bag, I would leave the main blocks attached to the boom for transport and storage. Thus, I had to make an allowance in the bag for the blocks !!! Worked pretty well til I got off my lazy butt and began storing them separately. Sailing solo most of the time, everything had to be a system. Hope you guys are doing well !!! :)

That's actually pretty funny! Good to hear from you. I am really day dreaming about sailing all day. Darn winter.
