Post subject:  My first pitchpole (kinda-sorta on purpose)
Went sailing today in 10-16 mph winds with 20 mph gusts. Great day, but we first set out to ensure I could right the boat. Of course in order to test that we pushed hard... a little too hard with a little too much forward weight. The result is obvious. Enjoy the video below...

I am going to steal and save your video to show newbies about the joy of pitchpoling! That is near perfect, with the crew having fun through the whole thing, right into the water laughing! I love it!

I have done the very same to several new guys on our beach... with the same response. They head out on their own and fear the pitch and the even capsizing... Then you take them out and just do it... and all is well.. Once back on their own boat life changes for them!

Water looked chilly, but fun!
How is Pickwick? I wouldn't mind camping and sailing there if its really nice? Small sailing good? I've been there years before but it was all jetski's, ski boats doing 50 mph and pontoon boats. Would be nice to do a fun sail with about 15 cats out there ;)

Pickwick was nice. I would describe the water as "comfortably cool" that day. Would have been "cold" if it wasn't sunny and 75-80. Definitely not wetsuit weather like it was early April. I found a NACRA 5.2 sailor there (trapped out crew in the videos above) that sails there often (and was completely shredding the lake this day). He has at least 1 friend with a Hobie 16 there. My take-away was that it's not like the scene at Arkabutla, and definitely saw more bass boats and pontoons than sailboats. But, there is a decent, sheltered launch from the point by East Port marina which made setup and launching pretty easy... it's not a sandy beach, but there is a smooth river rock type shore there to beach on. On this day, the wind was 10-15 mph steady with 20-22 gusts, coming from SSW and made for easy and fast reaches across the lake all day.

Speeds and angles look good. However I can see a clear hazard trying to criss cross the river 40 times from june to september over a weekend. I'm definitely game to make the trip this summer ;) I'd bet some fast catamarans out there would drum up a lot of interest in the sport. Have a popup that sleeps 4 with ice cold AC and a hobie 16 that should be able to ride on top of it. Free lodging. Same for another sailors wanting to sail within 200 Mi of memphis :)

Nice! Once it gets warm enough here I'm planning to get out and practice flipping my boat too. What did you use to collect the GPS data?

I wear a Garmin Forerunner 10. It's a good, simple device. I just sync the data and then use a tool like gpsvisualizer.com to make cool charts. Looks like they're down to just $80 on amazon.com these days.
