I want to sail by myself on my H16 but I only weigh 144 lbs and can't right my cat even with a bag.

Any photos out there to make a righting pole?

Thanks!

A normal righting pole is not gonna' do you much good at 144 lbs. You'd have to get/build the kind that you walk out on (more complicated), and that may not even work at your weight. Even Rick White's POWER righting system is not marketed as a SOLO righting system. Just wanted to make sure you're aware.

I built one from a 2.1 metre long 40mm diametre Aluminium tube (3mm wall thickness) I have used it solo many times ( I weigh 80 kg). Stored under the tramp when not in use.

in2bass - I'm only about 12 lbs. heavier than you and have no problem righting my Hobie 16 by myself with a righting bag. The righting bags come in different sizes. The one I use is the larger size with the block & tackle system sold by Murrays. Catalog number 01-3280. http://www.murrays.com (800)-786-7245
The larger bag holds more water and gives you more weight and the block & tackle makes it easier to lift as your boat is coming up. It's easy to store under your tramp when sailing and not being used.

Thanks for your email ... I have a bag with a block and tackle but just can't get it to right ...

I guess I have to get out there and practice with help close by if I get stuck.

In2Bass - If you're already using a large enough righting bag with a block & tackle and you're still not able to right your capsized H16, then you're either getting the mast stuck in the mud in fairly shallow water or there's something wrong with your technique. I think we're all assuming that your mast is sealed and you're not taking on water. If your technique is flawed then no righting aid will help you. Not a righting pole, shroud lengthening device nor a large righting bag..... There are plenty of posts on good righting technique. I suggest that you read them or watch some videos on YouTube. Then visualize it before you go out and try it again (with help close by). Please keep us informed.

Sometimes when you are by yourself its hard to get the boat around with the wind on the front quarter, by the time you get back to the side of the boat and get your bag winched up and you start to lean back the boat has turned all the way and is now broadside to the wind. You will never get her up with the wind directly at your beam, you need the wind to get under the sail and give you little help.

I got out on the water this weekend with my club (SHBCC) and took a lesson righting my H16 with another crew member ... sweet!
