So I've been taking my time trying to get the boat that my wife bought me back in '04 repaired (its a 1981 Hobie 16). Since then I've moved to several different places, and always checked on the status of things while working on it. Well, this last year the boat has remained sitting with no new developments taking place (was getting ready to tear down the trailer and rebuild it as I don't have the title to it - long story with the prev. owner). So I went out recently and I was next to the boat and said, I haven't checked it in a while. Delam - all over the top of the hull in the front area forward of the tramp mounts (tramp->hull). I'm not sure what to do. I barely have time to do anything with the boat anymore, and at this point and time (I was getting ready to just buy a new trampoline and take her out to see how she did) -- I don't know that I have it in me to repair delam on a boat hull...or Hulls. God knows where-else there is issues. Should I just get rid of the boat? I feel bad because my wife tried so hard to get me something I could enjoy and it's been interesting to re-learn everything and try to fix when I can. But I have a few broken toys that need fixing (and a few that have to be thrown out). What do you guys think? I cant DIY this. It's either pro or no. Whats the cost on pro boat repair? Would I be better off buying a brand new boat (or at least slightly used - emphasis on slightly. I feel like my wife got taken to the cleaners on this purchase years ago and I feel worse everytime I think about it). Thanks. -RK |

The very, very short story: Sell the boat or part it out - you don't have the time, motivation and probably $ to fix it properly, and it's not safe to sail it the way it is. Get something that won't make you feel guilty. There are quite a few lightly used 16s for sale in SoCal, but you will be paying north of $4K for them. |

Kind of figured that's what the answer would be. It's not like I couldn't do this - I just can't right now or anytime in the immediate future. Well, guess I'll have to figure out how to unload it then. Thanks. -RK |
