Hi all, I'm a leadmine (keel boat) racer/cruiser, normally. True story: 4 years ago when I bought my Pearson 30 off Craigslist, I also found another ad for a genoa being sold by a church sailing camp. I went to the camp to buy the sail for my Pearson. I saw a forlorn Hobie 16, sitting in the weeds and casually remarked "That looks like fun" and the camp counselor offered it up for $100 bucks. The boat is solid (tops of decks and hull), included the vehicle trailer and an excellent set of sails and nearly all the hardware to make it go. Divorce and other things got in my way, and the boat languished in my yard for 3+ more years. I knew I wanted to sail it this summer, so I started whipping it into shape this spring, and finally sailed it this past weekend. I am positively *hooked*. I have adult daughters that I've taken out and they love it. The summers on the Chesapeake are pretty light and make for dull Big Boat sailing, but the Hobie moves when a duck farts. The breeze filled in to around 10-12 knots in my creek on Sunday and I had the rudders humming and the windward hull trying to lift out of the water. The Hobie will scratch my speed and sailing itch when I can't get out on the big boat. Best of all, owning and maintaining this boat is CHEAP. Good times, and I look forward to seeing some of you out there. |

Sorry it took so long: Got out again this weekend. Wind started at 10, built to 15 with abrupt gusts to 20. Almost blustery. Once the wind built, I was a bit out of my league and capsized. You can read about it in the "Point of no return" thread. My boat is pretty vanilla, but I do love the obnoxiously loud sails it came with.

PS- The boat is all cleaned up since this picture. All the mold, mildew and funk is gone. |
