keen, huh? sailed for the first time today. taking it back out on saturday, then again on sunday!

couldn't have done it without you guys and all your help; thanks again to everyone.

Nice boat, those are my favorite sails that hobie has made. They look kinda hardcore yet still have some flare!

the water here's about 65 and the air was like 55 this morning when i was surfing. mere child's play : )

i'm going to try and take the boat out tomorrow.

there was some water in one of the hulls (we were only out for a half hour), but i don't know if it was already there or not, and the guy who took me out said it wasn't enough to worry about. i didn't see exactly how much, and i woudn't be worried at all, but i did hear a gurgling sound when the same hull was down in the water, which may or may not have been, but sounded like it might have been a hull taking on water. i have to get a feel for the various sounds the boat makes. any of you guys ever hear such a sound?

That might be a bad sign, the only time I heard that sound was when I forgot the plugs and got about 200 yards from shore before realizing it. You think the 14 tacks slow, try putting a bunch of water in it, on a really light winded day. Then you will learn how to tack.

On another note, tacking the 14 is tough. How did you do? Any blown tacks your first day out? Once you learn to tack the 14 with grace you will be able to handle anything, when I moved up to my Nacra I couldn't believe how well it tacked. But I am sure that was largely in part to all the skills I learned on the 14!

Could be one of two harmless things:

(1) Water slapping up inder the lip of the hulls
(2) The sound of the sterns dragging (move yoour weight forward in light air to life the sterns out of the water for speed and stealth ;) )

Course, it could be

(3) a big 'ol leak. It would have to be a pretty big one to hear it, and it sounds like you didn't have much water, so I doubt it.

My boat doesn't take on really anything while sailing but it fills slowly if I turtle or especially in the rain. Probably the pylons - ah well. Winter projects!

Incidently, I tried to move my boat off the beach at the Kirkland Splash regatta last season. The night before it dumped so much rain that there was nearly 2ft gathered in the parking lot after the storm-drains plugged. The boat was so full of water it took several people to help me tip it up to dump it :P Ahh, Washington!

Yeah, boats full of water are no fun! My 14 managed to fill up nicely one time when I turtled it. It was so full that it wouldn't float me and my friend so we hung onto the sides and sailed it in like that.

I hadn't thought about the sterns dragging!

it is going to get down to 28 here tonight, we may not make it outside tomorrow! we had ice on the ground this morning, big deal for us, 1 inch of snow and the town shuts down, in 1989 schools were closed for like 3 days!

That is pretty cold for Florida!

It gets that cold fairly often here but it doesn't snow much and when it does the same thing happens. "The worst inch of snow EVER!!" -Lewis Black. It likes instead to be 36 and raining ALL winter, which is frankly more miserable than snow.

I think about moving some times. Then I realize that right before I turn into work this morning, there is Mt. Hood rising 10,000 feet above the surrounding hills, silloueted by red clouds in the sunrise ("sailor take warning" indeed, work is just west of the Columbia River Gorge and it's blowing like snot even here).

A member of our fleet got his 17 last year and wanted to try it out - in December. They should've taken pictures. The snow level was a mere 500 feet above them on the surrounding hills, brrrrr!

Right on! Those are the same sails I have on my 1984 Hobie - what year is yours? I've never seen any other boat with the same sails!

it's a 1982, though the guy who sold it to me said it was an 87. oops.
