hi there, i picked up a 1976 hobie 16 tequila sunrise i paid a whopping $50 for the boat and trailer and it is mostly perfect, however the cam cleat on my main traveler control swivel is done for. there is no fixing it i must be replaced. I'm looking to replace the whole swivel, the bullseye, and the base that mounts to the frame. i have come across a "harken 420" unit that replaces all my bad parts but the working load on the cam cleat (i believe is harken 150) only has a working load of 300lbs. is that sufficient? also any ideas on where i can pick up the plastic swivel base? Yes you need one of these http://coliesail.com/harken-bullseye-wi ... o-cam.html or a Holt Allen HA4456 or HA4456HOB http://www.ebay.com/itm/HOLT-ALLEN-HA45 ... CE:GB:3160 They both have circular flat bases but you can salvage the base off your old one by grinding away the top of the rivet about which your old one rotates. Then screw your new one in-situ to the crossbar with the old base in between. |

Thanks for the help, I have noticed a small crack in the plastic base that is riveted to the crossbar, right around the rivit itself. Is this something that warrants hunting down a new base? I'm going to be sailing on the south Texas coast this weekend and I'm worried I'll loose the whole assembly if I hit a good puff. Maybe I'm being overly concerned? Thanks, Nathan |

I say if it's cracking, then replace it. Much less headache to replace it now and know you have good parts than to wait for it to break on the water and ruin your day. It's an easy fix - a couple screws and a rivet and you're done. sm |

I'd use your old one. Mine had a stress crack around the nose hole too but essentially that rivet only holds the nose of the plastic base in place and isn't that important because the bolts (or rivets) through the base of the actual block serve to hold the plastic base securely in place. On mine, the main traveller block was riveted and the identical 2 jib traveller blocks were screwed. The trouble will be that any new block has 3 holes in the base unlike the original which had 2. That means drilling new holes in the beam and at least one of the screws will inevitably extend into the tramp track, meaning you cant slide the tramp in or out. I had to angle grind it down. In SRMs photo above, this will be the screw that passes through the top left hole in the plastic base. The screws don't look long enough for that hole either, especially once the block is fitted on top...and how are you supposed to get the nut on the back of that nose bolt. Maybe the bolt is used for that hole and the nut is fitted via the tramp track (after removing the tramp). I still reckon a nut would foul the tramp sliding back in. |
