How far does the comp tip insert into the mast? Is it necessary to remove all of the mast tang rivets? There are 12 rivets. I believe the boat is a 1985.

You have to remove all the rivets - and make sure the tails are punched in enough to clear the aluminum mast extrusion.

The Comptip goes into the mast about 8 inches, maybe a bit more.

If the boat is a 1985, then it may have one of the original comptips which was a slightly different design than the current comptip and was only held in by two screws on each side of the mast. You would not need to remove all of the mast tang rivets to remove the comptip. However, if you are removing it to replace with a new comptip, then you would still have to remove the mast tang rivets and trim the mast before installing the new tip.
