Post subject: | Add a shroud? |
Hi y'all, i have a 70s boat that had some damage where the starboard shroud went through the hull. the previous owner had just mixed up some fiberglass resin and dumped it over the damaged area. i sanded off the inch or so of resin that was built up and patched the area. i also swapped out the metal rod that the shroud adjuster screws into with a 2 foot long rod that i machined to fit ( in hopes of distributing the load over more area decreasing the stress on the hull at the repair.) this seamed to worked very well. i sailed the boat all summer with no problems, however when the cold fronts started pushing down and the wind speeds picked up i found myself on the bay in about 20 knots. sheeted in on an a reach trying to get to the ramp and the whole bar ripped through the hull, knocked my crew around and dropped the mast. now i have to repair it again (or find a new hull). i was thinking about doing a little modification and trying to re use the hull. my thoughts were to come down from the mast with a single shroud as is standard, and somewhere about half way branch off too 2 separate cables one that i would attach about a foot forward of the standard location and one about a foot behind (again in an attempt to distribute the force acting on the hull. i know this will limit my ability to run because the boom would reach the rear shroud earlier then it typically would. however that dose not worry me very much. any suggestions? anyone ever tried anything similar? Thanks, Nathan |

If the hull failed with a two foot long attachment bar, spreading out the load with a split shroud isn't going to work either. You need a new-to-you hull. The deck lip is normally very strong - when it fails like this, then the entire hull is suspect. |
