![]() ![]() For every launch and recovery for 8 years I have only had concrete ramps to utilize. I decided that this would be the year I did a complete 3 or 4 layer fiberglass and gel coat job. I flipped it over in the back yard and what did I discover? All I need is a partial gel coat refinish. The picture is of the worst side. It's about 7 feet of worn thru gel with no damage to the fiberglass. These boats are build to be sailed. I need to wait for the weather to get above 60 or so and then tape, sand, clean and brush on. Barkeepers Friend has taken care of all the yellow staining and I will be ready to go. Amazing boats. Thanks Hobie. |

Very nice! That's the quality that allows people to sail 30 year old boats! |

Can you share what brand of "brush on" gel coat you have? Does it still require you to mix 2 parts and use a thinner and hardener? (same procedure as for spraying or is there a single can of paint you can use to brush on?) Thank you |

1 quart US Composites. MEKP for catalyst. I just went on their site and mixed according to their instructions. I used a kitchen scale to get the weights correct. It worked out very well. just make sure and leave out the wax until the very last layer. I ended up with 6 layers because I made the mistake of trying to role it on. It orange peeled so bad it took 2 extra applications to smooth it all out again. Foam brush only in my opinion. No thinner unless you are going to try and spray on. I would only do that if I had a much larger area to cover. Hardly worth the effort or expense for the bottoms of the hulls. |
