I've recently had reef points added to a spare main which I use for sail camping trips on my H16. Does anybody have the standard Hobie position length for the 2nd thimble on a main halyard line? I'm thinking a swage will do the trick? Worst case i'll raise the main with my mast down to ensure I find the correct position. Cheers in advance |

Matt, It appears that you have a 2007 H-16 which would have a comptip mast. The halyard with the comptip has a short wire with a slug to latch off the sail in the top postion. The reefed main requires another slug further down the halyard and has to be on wire. Rope would not fit into the notch. Up to '85, before the comptip, the halyard had a much longer wire with 2 slugs. I would think you need to change halyards to an older one. It is possible that the reef points you added are not in the same position as the original reef location. You might have to add a third slug to the replacement old halyard. The long wire in the old halyard would negate the whole purpose of the comptip which is protection from overhead electric wires. As I think about this, perhaps you could just add a length of rope to the halyard between the top of the sail and the end of the wire on the halyard. That would allow you to latch the sail on the original slug without raising the sail above the reef points. you would have to drop the sail completely to remove the spacer rope and shake out the reef. It has the added benefit of not defeating the integrity of the comptip protection. |

Thanks for your response Howard and your ideas around the comptip. Unfortunately thou we don't have comptip masts for the H16 here in Australia so our halyard is half wire/rope - much easier for adding the 2nd thimble/slug. I was just hoping somebody had the halyard with the reef slugs for measurement that's all. |

Matt - I still have the original all aluminum mast on my Hobie 16. From the shackle, which attaches to the top of the main, to the first slug (or swage) is about 14 inches. From that slug (or swage) to the second slug (for reefing the main) is about 44 1/2 inches. I use the word "about" because I'm not being precise. I don't think that 1/8 inch either way will make any difference when you add that second slug for reefing purposes. Since you're not required to have a comp tip on your mast in that part of the world, you should still be able to get the correct halyard from a Hobie Dealer in Australia. I hope this helps. |

That's great, thank you both. Replacing the halyard will not solve this problem. Genuine Hobie mains are no longer made with reef points and so the halyard no longer has need for the extra thimbles/slugs. I just need to add one to my current halyard for the correct reef setup with maximum down haul. Thanks again! |
