If properly seated mine lasts all season. For $1 or whatever they cost I put in a new one each spring. If I start seeing the edge of it coming up in the mast step I replace it, which happened one time. Otherwise I leave the mast up all summer and have only seen the chip worn through once or twice by October. I know a guy who just uses those teflon screw-on Coke bottle caps, but that seems extreme cheapness to me.

I usually get around a season out of them also. Keep spares, though! When I trailered regularly as opposed to keeping the mast up out back, I would forget to take them out and lose them now and then. Think just about every trailer sailor has lost a few of those!

Since 2004 we have modified the mast step cup to have a series of small dimples around the inside of the chip diameter. As the chip presses into the cup, they lock into the dimples. Works great!

How to do the chip keeper:

Stays in place even when trailering.
