I damaged my Hobie 16 last fall when I was putting it away for the winter. There as a small hole about 2-3 inches in diameter. When taking the boat out for the spring I realized that there was really an area of delimitation around the hole with a diameter of about 1 ft. I ground away the top layer of gel coat and fiberglass and removed the foam as well. It appeared that the inner layer of fiberglass separated from the foam in this area. I'm planning on cleaning this interior layer or fiberglass, bonding new foam to it with polyester resin, and then laying new fiberglass on top. Question 1: how flexible should the inner layer of fiberglass be? It seems like it flexes pretty easily but I'm not sure if it's that way by design or if it's actually damaged. Question 2: what order should I lay the new fiberglass down on top of the foam? In an article on repairs from this old hobie it looks like it's 2 layers of cloth and then 3-4 layers of mat on top of that (working outward). Does that sound right? Thanks in advance for any advice! |

The fiberglass skins are very thin (especially the inner one) so they will be quite flexible individually. Once the glass and foam are all bonded together, the structure should be solid. Fiberglass cloth should be laid down first, followed by mat and then gelcoat. sm |
