| Post subject: | Mast step/base rivets...where???? |
After all the work I have put in to restoring my H16 all that Im missing to hit the water are two rivets that attach the mast step to the front beam/crossmember. The ones I need are the two facing the tramp...these are 1/4" in diameter which I cant find anywhere.... I did replace all the other rivets in the frame with s/s 3/16" rivets, and attached the forward part of the mast base to the crossmember with the 3/16" rivets....the ones facing the tramp are 1/4".... Where can I find these?????? Thanks! |

According to the book of knowledge, those are supposed to be 6-8 rivets (8011231). (sorry - clipped the send before I was done). If the front cross bar has been drilled out to 1/4", there is a 1/4" x 1" rivet (8011281), but that is probably too long. Any chance you can use a rivet cap with a 6-8 rivet? Brian C |

Does any dealer have the 1/4" rivets available/in stock that can be shipped to me in an envelope??? I could go to the local hobie dealer but they seem to wait for large orders before making their request to Hobie Cat..... Anyone? thanks! |

Thanks guys....I have found them at mcmaster.com... a box of 25 or 50 not sure for 9.02$ + s/h. All aluminum mandrel and flange. All I need are 2 so Ill save the rest....will place order today.... |

Alex, I'll defer to the experts out there, but I think that Hobie rivets are made from Monel, which is supposed to be tougher than Aluminum, and won't corrode like stainless steel rivets. Anyone care to chime in? |

In this case I would use Monel (also availabel from McMaster-Carr). The mast base sees loads other than compression. If you put the aluminum rivets in shear they will not last long. Do not use stainless steel unless you get the plastic sleeves to prevent electrolysis. |

Ill search tomorrow for the monel rivets instead of the alum...still havent ordered...Depending on costs Ill order one or the other...I could replace the alum ones every year if needed if the monel rivets are too expensive.... thanks! Ill let u guys know what I did! |

I strongly suggest you avoid the aluminum rivets for this application. Spend the extra money and get the monel. I design machines for a living so I do have some credibility. |

Nick...I couldnt find the monel rivets at mcmaster....Where could I get these???? Also the alum 1/4" rivets they have are .975 long...will this be enough to pass thru the thick base and to the crossmember?? thanks!! |

could you just fill the holes in the cross bar and drill new holes the correct size. Don't put the new holes in the old location just real close, then make sure the old holes don't leek. we do this on old mast base when they pull out. |

Alex, go to their website and go to page 3156 of the catalog. They only have one choice, but I think it will work. IF not, try these guys http://www.marineprepacks.com/fastenings/detail.asp?line=brivet. I have not used them, but I think you can buy small quantities. Good Luck |
