Post subject: | Hobie 16 Hull Delamination |
I know this topic has been thoroughly discussed many times, but I have a question reference the composition of the layers. I am about to complete the first delam repair on my 1980 Hobie 16. For some reason the port hull has softened. The starboard hull still seems solid. Anyway, I am hoping someone familiar with the laminated layers can answer the below question. I would prefer not having answers posted unless you are certain about what you say please. I am going to complete the repair using the epoxy method (drilling through the outer layer, then injecting the epoxy, etc.). My question is this: Will the epoxy actually saturate the foam, or does it just enter and harden in the spaces between the foam and the inner and outer fiberglass layers without being soaked up by the foam? The reason I ask is because I will be doing the repair by compressing the layers prior to injecting the epoxy using the zip tie method. However, if the foam will not soak up the injected epoxy, then this compression method may not work as well. However, if the epoxy does saturate the foam, then I believe this is the best method. It will use less epoxy, it will keep the layers together as they were intended, and lastly, the less epoxy used the less additional weight added because of it. So does anyone know whether the foam will soak up the epoxy? Thanks in advance for your (well informed) replies. |

The foam is a closed-cell polyurethane foam similar to Airex (http://www.airexbaltekbanova.com/airex-foam.html) It has low resin absorption. So to answer your question, the foam will not "soak up the resin." Resin injection renews the bond between the fiberglass/polyester resin layers and the foam. It will fill voids between the layers and it will add weight to the boat. |
