i am looking to purchase used beach wheels for my hobie 16. i am not having much luck finding used ones. is anybody here selling one/ i have even thought about building my own. does anybody here think it would be wise? i thought about using barbie jeep wheels for the wheels and PVC. pitch me ideas please. would love to her input. |

The problem is that they need to be local or the shipping will be expensive. There is one for sale in the Philadelphia 'burbs: http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/bpo/5515373273.html I thought about making them but it's not easy to make something that is light enough and strong enough, and doesn't cost too much to build. I would not use PVC pipe or toy wheels. You need something stronger than that. You also need a pretty large and wide wheel to get you the ground clearance you need and to avoid getting stuck. In the end I bought a used set and fixed them. |

I built a set with dock wheels and 2" diameter aluminum tubing from metalsonline.com. Didn't really save much, they cost me about $250 to make. Years ago, I built one for my H-17 using a 30 gallon plastic barrel. I put plywood disks on the ends. I don't remember what I used for tubing. But the whole thing was pretty cheap, I'm sure. I was pretty broke. |

so i came up with this idea. i have an older trailer with smaller wheels. I figured i could take off the axle, get another set of the same tires so as to distribute the load. it would look like i have a set of duelly's. i believe the trick would be is to get longer lug bolts that would fit. |

I've seen the beach wheels discussion a hundred times..... If you're gonna spend a ton of time and effort just to end up with something half as good as the real deal beach wheels..... just buy them to begin with. NOTHING beats the original beach wheels. they're light, tough, proven great and if you ever sell them, you'll get 80% of your money back. win win. |

I think there are some issues to consider with this idea: 1. Beach wheels have the wheels between the hulls and the axle extends beyond the wheels on each side, so the hulls have something to rest on. Trailer axles are designed so that the wheels are at the end of the axle, so you need a very wide axle and some way to keep the boat located between the wheels without hitting them. 2. Your axle and dual wheel assembly would be very heavy! You can lift beach wheels easily with one hand. 3. Do you know if super long lug bolts exist? I have not seen anything long enough to go through two sets of wheels. I'm sure something could be made to work but probably requires some thought. |

back in the day, many lowriders use to use extended bolts to make the wheels stick out more. if i get longer bolts all i would need to do is put one tire on the regular way and just turn the other tire inwards. same as a set of duels. i can always drill holes in the axle to lighten her up. the trailer axle is already designed to be on the inside of the cat so that part is already done. |
