Post subject:  Should I buy?

Hey guys! I've never owned on but have been sailing them since I was a kid. I found a guy who is selling a hobie 16 with trailer and sails. Haven't seen it in person yet but from the pics all the rigging appears to be there as well as the sails. Tramp looks to be in good shape and so does the trailer. The hulls were spray painted black. I'm going to go check it out and look for any damage. Here's what is what I'm interested about, he is willing to sell it to me for $500. He has the title but never registered it. It was given to him but he can not swim so does not want to use it. What do you guys think? Should I do it? What are areas to look closely at on the boat?

Thanks in advance guys! I really appreciate the input and advice

The hulls being spray painted could cover up past damage. On that matter, ask what year the boat is and if the hulls have shown signs of delamination. I hope that there's no damage.

You need to find out what year boat it is and knock/push on the hulls to see how solid they are. Good hulls ring, OK hulls are more of a thud and bad hulls crunch when you push on them. The year just tells you about the construction details.

For $500 with trailer it's hard to go too wrong, but if the boat truly is junk then it can still be a little bit upside down. If the hulls are solid or only have small soft spots then you're OK even if you have to buy some used sails.
