Post subject:  Hull Leak and Repair ?
Hello- I could use some help. I'm new to Hobie's and repairing them.

I have a hull that is taking on water (1 gal or so per day).

Did the spray bottle of soaping water and found minor leak at pylon joint/seam, so I'll fix that (would silicone be good enough there?).

I think there is a bigger leak though but can't locate it for certain. It seems like air might be coming out of the edge of the deck when blowing air in the drain hole (is that possible?).

The edge/lip seems like wood, but is it just fiberglass? See picture of the deck lip- I have a 1976 I'm told.

Does it look like I need to epoxy the deck to hull seam?

How should I repair the lip of the deck if that could be leaking??

Worked ok on my old 14. Check the shroud anchor holes one of mine was drilled a bit inward and leaked on my 80 16. I wouldn't stress too hard on a gallon a day...if I'm sailing hard my hulls always have a little water.

Thanks for the reply @hobiesrock!

I found that the lip is just fiberglass and there was some silicon added to mine which was deteriorating. I used a razor blade and dremel to clean up the lip, and then resealed the lip with some epoxy. There were some spots where the foam core was visibly damaged too, so hopefully this was my leak!

I didn't do the deck to hull seam repair because it seemed ok, but I did put some epoxy over the fiberglass that was chipping away under the lip (in picture above). Not pretty but should help seal and protect that fiberglass.

For the epoxy, I used the West Marine Sixten product because it comes in a simple caulk gun tube (and was cheaper than buying all the epoxy, hardener, pumps, etc.).

As mentioned earlier, I'm an amateur, but hopefully this repair will do the job! I'll post results after I go sailing.

As you can see from the attached photo of a hull cross-section, there is no foam core in the lip.

Ah- my mistake. I thought is was foam, but it must be old glue/epoxy that I saw deteriorating in between the fiberglass.

Hoping to get a few more years out of this Hobie... we'll see what happens.

Good news: The hull I repaired is now leaking less than the other hull, so I did something right!

Check your rudder assy. too.I found that one of the rudder pins had worn a hole at the very top of the port hull or maybe it was a defect from the factory.Not sure which.Repaired now,zero water in the hulls.
