Post subject: | Why do I keep breaking rudders? |
Hi, First time posting on the forum, although I've consulted it several times for help. This time I searched the forum, but couldn't find an answer, so it seemed like time to jump in. I have a 74 Hobie 16 that I purchased last year and just broke my second rudder. In both cases the whole thing snapped off about 6-8 inches from the top, just below the casing. The first time, I didn't have the rudder locked in the vertical, and google has led me to believe that was my fault. But the second one was locked down, in deep water, winds 10-15 mph, no significant pull on the rudder arm to speak of, just a little "pop" and most of my starboard rudder is horizontal rather than vertical. These are your basic white rudders. Am I doing something wrong or do I just have rotten luck? I don't want to keep replacing rudders, they are too expensive to replace every season. Thanks, John |

Classic... Old ABS rudders... they give up after awhile. New standard rudders are far tougher (Nylon). |

Thanks! Would you suggest new nylon, or used fiberglass? |

The old rudders fail pretty easily when 30+ years old. I'd be searching for used Hobie EPO rudders. I've seen gen 1 ones go for $200 a pair and they're a modern design and tough. Any of the 80's fiberglass ones would be an upgrade too. |

Thanks! I'll look for a set of fiberglass. John |

I have a set of fiberglass that I would make you a deal on. Fiberglass are stiffer than the regular rudders but not as light as EPOs. I haven't used them and they are sitting in my shed. I can send you photos. Just let me know. |
