Hi everyone, I live in Daytona Beach and it's Biketoberfest...
On my way home from sailing my 16 today I was making a right turn and got hit by a guy on a motorcycle. He was fine, but managed to remove the transom from my left pontoon. I wanted to see what folks on this forum recommend. Is repairing the pontoon going to cost too much or add too much weight? Should I look for another hull instead?
I know there's a lot of experience on this forum; please pipe in!

And in case you were wondering, he didn't have insurance.

Lol the bike won against the hobie? Are there photos of the bike?

On the other hand, this looks like it can get fixed. It seems like it is just separated, not broken. I can't see clear the bottom end though.

The damage looks a lot like the damage when you run aground and the rudders don't pop up, ripping the transom off. Search google for "hobie transom repair". Quite a few people have posted about this and I'm sure there is some good advice in there.

My question is what was that bike doing on the water (just kidding), it sucks when stuff like this happens, we have a friend who forgot to tie his 24 ft larson powerboat down on his trailer, and the boat came off the trailer onto the ground in the middle of the busiest intersection in Sarasota, it was there for hours, while they tried to figure out how to get it out of there, they ended up bringing in a huge crane, that's gotta be embarrassing.
We have a TI, and one of our pontoons came loose, and was dragging on the ground until I could pull over, whoops.

Looks like a break that was waiting to happen, and the guy did you a favor by showing it to you!

I was thinking the same thing. It wasn't going to take much to rip that transom off after seeing the rot on the inside.

Not sure what is the benefit of having something that can rot or swell when wet in a transom in the first place.
