Can anyone tell me who might do some fiberglass repair in Raleigh? Just bought a 78 Hobie 16. Took it to lake wheeler yesterday and capsized. Think I delaminated a small section when I slipped on hull trying to right it. Also, would love to get new color on hulls. |

I can't direct you towards a fiberglass repair shop in your area, but I would warn you to be very cautious about putting much money into a 40 year old Hobie that is showing signs of delamination. Search around on this forum and you will find countless discussions about people attempting to repair delaminated boats that are too far gone to be saved. If you think it truly is an isolated area of delamination, I would suggest you purchase a small amount of epoxy and fix it yourself using the injection method. Get a few more outings on your boat and make sure it actually is seaworthy and not going to snap in half before you start dumping money into re-gelcoating the hulls. Just my 2 cents. sm |

I would fix the spot with injection also. 1st time out, who is to say what more will happen with it in a season. You may as well get a quart of Git-rot. You don't say how big a small section is. Fresh gelcoat can be expensive, it probably would cost more than the value of the boat to have someone do it for you. I have done my own, just the hulls and skipping the decks, It's easy to spend 300+ in supplies. There's alot of surface area to prep on the 16. My brother has an 18 he was thinking of having me do. But with the amount of work it needed it wasn't worth the grand it would cost him. I figured about 40 + hours of labor on that one, to refinish it. His 18 has more surface to repair, cover, wet sand and polish. And that would be just the hulls, skipping the decks. I do plan on doing his 3.5 (11') labor free this year, as it is a trainer for his grandchildren. |
