Hi guys,

I am finally going to bite the bullet and decide between this and another H16 I posted earlier. This guy is asking $6000 for this H16 , it has no trailer and the bottom of the hulls do not seem to be in that great of shape. It is a 2005 although he says he bought it new and it didn't touch the water until 2007 and he says it is in excellent shape but I am debating because for $4000 more I could get a new one. So just wanted to see what you thought about it pictures below. I offered 5000 cash and he said he has gotten a lot of hits on hit so it was to low and that it wasn't a project boat, so whatever , take a look.

I don't know, at that price and no trailer, I think I'd pass.

Keels would need gel coat before they get worn any further, so that is a project. It's had 10 years of beach landings for sure. Seems to have most of the modern equipment. With a new 16 selling above 12 G now without a trailer, I think your offer was fair. You don't show the sails in any photos, are they in good shape?

Thanks cpnsoo and Hobie Marty appreciate the feed back , yeah I think I am going to pass without the trailer and plus the keels being worn I just do not think it was worth it

You can find an older model, in good condition for less money. It took 3 or 4 months of searching last year, every other day checking boats for sale through many venues and even went to look at a couple in person. Drove 4 hours one way to look at a Turbo 14 that looked good in pictures but in person, was beat up. I too was not looking for a project. When I found my boat I was more than ready to get her and met the sellers offer completely because I didn't want this one to get away. The boat was around 3 grand and even though it is an older boat, I thought the price was reasonable. My boat was a 2 owner boat, garage kept, very lightly used, no soft spots anywhere on the hulls, everything about the boat was like new and very well taken care of. It included a very nice trailer with sail storage tube and spare tire, a set of new cat trax beach wheels, and a fitted cover for the boat. The boat itself has double trapezes, 2 harnesses, extra hardware, arriba stick hiking stick that is fiberglass, sail repair kit, and original performance manual, Hobie assembly manual, and a manual for the trailer. The sails were bright and crisp as well.
Like I said before, it took a while to find what I was looking for and even though my boat is an older one, she is like new and with the condition and extras that came with the boat, I feel that what was paid was fair. Beach wheels are pricey and the cover alone is about a grand.
So keep looking. Good boats are out there, you just have to be diligent and keep up the search. Wishing you good luck.

It's pretty much a pristine boat (but no sail photos?)

Are the black spots on the keels trailer roller scuffs or actual worn gel coat?

I just sold my 2007 16 for $5900 with no trailer. This boat is in similar condition.

And an "older model" will not have everything that's been done to the boat since the mid-'80s. While older boats are superficially similar to post-2000 boats, they are not the same. Lighter, stiffer, better rudders - the list goes on.

Well, I would guess it's all in what you want out of the boat. Older models have older running gear of course but that didnt matter to me as I wasn't getting the boat to race, and use it for fun and casual sailing.
Personally, I would not purchase a boat that didn't have a trailer, not only do you have the cost of the boat, you have the added expense of a trailer and they ain't cheap! Anyhoo.

It's not just a racing thing - newer boats just work better and are much more pleasurable / easier to sail.

Not everyone needs a trailer. The guy I sold my 16 to (someone I've known for 30 years) certainly didn't. It was not his first boat. Or his second. Or even his third. Actually, I think he owns at least four or five boats now (14, 16, 17 and Wild Cat).

If an older boat is kept up and wasn't used much and is kept tight and everything kept in nice working order, I would think the boat would sail fine. I understand the older boat is not going to be like a new one, but I think my older boat sails just fine.
As for the trailer deal, I know everyone's needs are not all the same. A trailer is a must have for me as I am about a 30 minute drive to our lake house and 4 hours from the beach, that's why I said, "personally", when I made the comment about not purchasing a boat that didn't have a trailer.

By the way, there is a 2004 H16 in good shape in St Joe Beach, Fl (near Panama City) for $4700.00 and has a trailer. I saw it on Craigslist just now.

Are the beach wheels included, and is that something you would use?
I don't know if that's wear on the bottoms, or just marking? What's the seller say about it?

Here's a link to one in NJ for under 4000 with a trailer. http://www.boattrader.com/listing/2007- ... -103082444

That's not a 2007. More like 1985. The hull graphics, jib traveler cars (surface mounted track is pre-1995) and general decrepit-ness give it away.

Agree, definitely not a 2007 model for sure. Even for an older model, in that condition, that one is overpriced.

The Jersey boat may date back to 84, when you blow up the photo there's no sign of a comptip mast.
