| Post subject: | Vintage Butt Bucket Hobie Harness |
My boat has 2 orginal "butt bucket" style harnesses, blue with big yellow flying H on the backs. Anyhoo, we set the boat up in the back yard yesterday and I was going to show my son how the harness worked. He put it on and it fit him fine but I don't understand how the center "crotch" strap part works. These harnesses have never been used and I kind of wanted to give them a try this week, could someone explain how you wear these things? Thanks. |

If the hook plate is square with slots for straps, then the crotch strap goes through the bottom slot and then you insert a 3/8" rod through one of the slots in the strap (multiple slots allow for size adjustments). A piece of rudder pin or wooden dowel works fine as the rod. I used to tape the rod in place (duct tape) to keep it from slipping out. |

Ahhh, okay I see now. The crotch strap on these have multiple adjustment settings. In the tool kit that came with the boat, there are two nylon/plastic short rods. I wondered what they were for. They probably were used with the harnesses. Thanks. |

Yep, that's what the plastic rods are for. I have one of those old diapers and prefer it for casual daysailing when I don't think I'll be on the wire much. It kinda sucks for long periods on the wire though. |
