Probably not. Doesn't mean it won't be light, but after all these years - I wouldn't count on it.

Redline started in 1984 to indicate the change in glass layup to try getting the boats to 320, so actually could be. Weights varied for many years... no promises. We dialed in better after around the mid 2000's it seems.

Coleman bought Hobie Cat in 1976 and did not sell the company until late 1987 (the deal didn't close until 1988).

So technically, all boats made during that period were "Coleman Co. by Hobie Cat" boats. What changed was the hull graphics (in 1984) that put the Coleman branding on the boats.

I thought that "Redline" was just a sail color pattern. ???

"Redline boats" is just a colloquialism to describe the red hull/deck glue seam that was used to identify boats with lighter hull construction starting with the 1984 model year.

If you look under the hull flange along the trimmed edge where the deck and hull are joined, you will see a thin red line running down the middle which is the red glue holding the hull together.

Hence the distinction "red line" boat.

Here is a pic of the "redline" from the transom of the boat near the rudder pin. I took a picture of it when I was repairing my transoms. It was much easier to see after a little sanding.

Wow, I just checked and my boat is in fact a redline. Also the aft end of the stripes that are on the hulls have "Hobie Cat" on them but nothing saying Coleman, but my original assembly manual has the Hobie Cat logo and Coleman logo at the top of the table of contents page. Wish I could post some pics but my Photobucket is not allowing 3rd party hosting anymore which sucks, but hey, my boat's a redline!!!

I found the 86 hulls to replace some soft 83's. The 86 boat was noticeably lighter. You could really tell the difference moving it around on the beach.

I move my boat around on the beach wheels all the time in my back yard and thought it was really easy to do. Then, when I sailed her, I noticed that she got moving really quick, even in light air. Now I know why. :D
