I just bought a 1986 H16 "red line" that is excellent condition. It's been kept in a garage for the last 10 years and the hulls are solid. I've read most of the posts regarding these "red line" boats and there seems to be some concerns about fragility. Is there anything I can or should do to beef up the boat? There are several posts about adding support to the H18 boats, but since i can't access the inner hull, I'm not sure what to do with mine. I'm also sure there is lead inside this boat's pylons. I took the boat apart to clean and rebuild it and I can here some shifting around in the rear pylons on each hull. Should I take this lead out to maximize performance or leave it as is. I'm new to the board so thanks in advance! |

I don't recall any issues for the Hobie 16 Red Line... The problems were all H18. |

Lead in the hulls of a 16? Maybe what you are hearing are the foam blocks bumping around in there. My '84 is a "redline" and is light, never heard of them having lead in them. I haven't had any issues at all with my boat, she too was garage kept and lightly used. |

Missed the part about the lead... That was added in the beginning as the minimum boat weight for racing was 340. You can try to remove it. Once the rules changed they quit adding the weight. |

Great to hear that there are no issues with the H16 red lines. I misunderstood and thought the concerns were with all the red line boats. I'll let you know if I find any lead. Thanks for the feedback! |

Where would the lead be located and how does one go about removing it? I thought the redline boats were built to get the weights down closer to 320lbs? |

Inside the rear pylon. I believe capped with resin. They had to make the boats conform to the rule (340 lbs) until it changed to 320. It was a short period. |

So now I am wondering if my 84 boat has lead in it. It seems really light. I guess the only way to find out is to weigh it because I'm not taking my pristine beauty apart, Lol. |

Pretty sure the lead in my '84 was in the front pylons, but it's been a long time. And it was capped / infused with urethane foam. I still have a chunk of it: Marty - you can't tell if there's lead by weighing the boat. You have to take the boat apart, pull the foam plugs out of the pylons and look down inside them. |

Yeah, okay then. I'm not interested in racing the boat anyway so I guess it really doesn't matter to me if the boat has a little lead in it for weight. I'm not taking my boat apart to find out, it's very light anyway. |

Checked in the pylons on my 1986 H16 red line while I have her taken apart and didn't find any lead. Front or back. |

anyone remember how much lead & which pylons?? our 84 hulls (redline weigh 84# & 85# respectively..) i'll bet there is lead in the pylons..we got the hulls off and the foam seems pristine in the pylons..do you just pull it out looking for the lead? I was thinking the hulls weighed what they did due to the fact they are painted...I don't believe they are waterlogged..but maybe there is lead in them there hills |
