Hi guys, my mainsheet cleat isn't holding... took it apart and there's no spring on one side. Some of the ball bearings fell out but I put them back in, but with the cleat not springing back together it doesn't hold the main sheet, so I have to hold the line the whole time instead. I'm looking to replace just the cleat, and not the whole block. Is this part the right size? I couldn't find it in the parts guide. http://www.nzsailing.net/harken-0471-wa ... rip-171230 Cheers |

Things may be different on your side of the world (I'm in US), and it's been a while since I went through this, so things might have changed. That said.... It's a Harken 150 (same as the cleat on the main traveler swivel) and comes with either plastic or aluminum jaws. As stated above, you want aluminum. If the teeth on the jaws are okay (it will hold except for the broken spring), then there's no need to replace the entire cleat. You can buy the springs for a few bucks or a complete rebuild kit (springs, ball bearings, spacers, etc.) for $10 more (which is my recommendation). They are very easy to rebuild (I keep a rebuilt spare on hand)....instructions are on Harken's website. Be sure to work over something that will corral the ball bearings when you fumble the operation (which is bound to happen at least once!). A little shaving cream will help hold them in place during assembly and is easily rinsed out when you're done. Another tip regarding the main sheet cleat....Each click on the angle adjustment is around 20 or 30 degrees depending on the block model. As I got more experienced (and started trapping lower), I found myself needing to set the angle between the available clicks to easily cleat while trapped out and still be able to easily uncleat while not trapped. Harken also sells a 10 (maybe 15?) degree wedge that you install under the base of the 150, and that solved this problem. Hope this helps! |

Thanks for the helpful response rattle 'n hum/Jerome, Our fleet leader and I took apart the cleat shortly before the race the other day. He had an extra spring. We couldn't locate a spring under the cleat, and the ball bearings were falling out (luckily we recovered all but one of them). We used sunblock to put the thing back together, closest thing to grease or shaving cream we had readily available. Since we couldn't find a spring anywhere we were puzzled and so I'm looking for just a new cleat altogether. (FYI, I found the one in the link to be too small). Our fleet lead was pretty surprised because he had taken these apart on the H14 and said it apparently was different on the H16. Although I doubt Harken would've updated these things, I'm wondering if they updated it and it changed recently? I'll continue looking for a new cleat. The boat is still sail-able after all. If you have a link to the rebuild kit please let me know. |
