Post subject:  Bought a 50 dollar Hobie 16...please help me restore

New fourm member,

Hello Hobie members. I am going to try to tell my story with out writing a novel and I am looking for much feed back as I attempt to restore a 73 Hobie 16 that I ended up buying for 50 dollars. I am a green horn, as far as restoring a CAT but I am mechanically inclined and I do own a 96 MasterCraft ProStar 190 competition ski boat.

Bottom line is the MIL has a lake lot and the family needs a weekend saver for when the wind kicks up on our lake. Not always....but enough to want to try sailing.....which I am a novice at best.

Here is how the beginning of the story goes. I came across and gentleman, (craigslist), that purchased a 100 acer plot of land which had a Hobie 16 on it. He know absolutely nothing about Hobies but wants this thing off his new land. Monday the ad says "make an offer". By the time Saturday rolls around, he claims that he has had a lot of calls and now says "first 300 takes it". He seems trust worthy. I set up a time to meet him to view the boat with no cash in my pocket. 30 minutes from my front door. No history on the boat. Boat is sitting on top of a hill, only access is up a road that has been completely wash out in many areas. So before I climb my Jeep up to the vessel, I tell him "this a contingent on a couple of things". No soft spots in the hulls and needs to be a complete boat. Fast Foward.

I find the Boat is sitting on a flat farm trailer and its not close to serviceable
No sails
Port side rudder cracked in half and sitting on trailer
Port side rudder assembly missing, no cross bar and no tiller
Trampoline at first seems thin
Ropes dry rot
No Jib Halyard
No shroud cable
No Forestay cable

So I am doing the math in my head, but with no sails, I already know its a no go. The one rudder and assembly is the biggest hurdle after that. I do not need a trailer in the long run. So I look over the hulls just for fun....so I don't end this thing in 3 seconds, they surprisingly check out....no soft spots and no de-lamination on top. Seems like a re-store-able boat in my amateur opinion. I really don't know what I am doing, so I tell him, "I would be too upside down on the boat and if someone offers you 300 you should take it". He says how about 50 bucks. I said
"maybe." He tells me, "let me show you this cool abandoned house on the property before you go". Fast Forward.....I find the perfectly stored sails in the house and buy the boat for 50 dollars. Fast forward

I go to the bank. I return to tear boat apart. I put everything in my Jeep Grand Cherokee minus the hulls and Mast. I return on Sunday (by myself) and hike both hulls and mast 1/4 of a mile down the road and strap to flat trailer. Now a mostly complete boat sits in my garage.

Many posts to follow
Someone tell me how to upload pictures

I am posting this 2nd post so all later post go live. Things I would like to know.....I don't really do social media, so help me become a good contributing member. I welcome all feedback that meets forum rules. Before you ask, yes I carried both hulls and mast on my back a hiked them out approximately 1/4 mile down a hill. It took 3 trips. I was by myself...no pictures.

Looks like the hulls are cleaning up nicely.
