I recently embarked on installing new die cast gudgeons on my '95 H16. What a pain:

Holes have to be enlarged (to 1/4") and elongated somewhat - OK I can do that.
Part of the lip on my hulls needs to be ground down. - It hurt, but I did it.
The original screws will not seat because the casting interferes. - I ordered some 12 - 24 x 1" stainless socket head cap screws. I hope that fixes the problem.

Should I drill and tap the lower two holes also?

What else am I in for?

And guess what? The socket cap heads will interfer with rudder castings now too. I feel your pain

On my last boat, I cut off the bottom with the 2 holes. They just don't fit a 14 very well.

Heres a pic of my gudgeons, with the socket cap heads and the casting cut off at the bottom to fit. I had to go larger socket cap heads cause the screws were already oversize in the holes. Using them causes the socket heads to touch the rudder castings, so you will have to grind a bit of the rudder castings off to allow the rudders to turn correctly.

Thanks,

I think on the 16 I can drill and tap the lower 2 holes. It looks like you had to remove the flange on the lower bushing - something I'll have to do as well.

I give up - this project was one nasty surprise after another.

Holes don't line up.
Interferes with top lip of hull.
Screws won't seat - ordered socket head cap screws.
socket head cap screws still need help - dremel the casting a bit.
top flange of middle bushing had to be removed with a hot knife.
socket head cap screws now interfere with rudder swing - game over.

I think this is a case of Hobie Europe taking a different evolutionary path, their lower rudder castings must be different too.

Anyone want a set of these? - only one has been modified and I'll throw in the socket head screws.

If you order the Euro Gudgeon for the 14 then no cutting. Basically just bolted on. Found a post on the net off topic and sure enough a different part number for the Euro 14 model. YMMV.
