Post subject:  How do I fix this?

I bought my Hobie 16 last spring, but only sailed it twice last season. Both times when I pulled the plugs out I had a little bit of water draining out of the starboard hull. I noticed what looked like a small repair in the hull and decided to investigate. This is what I found. All the places you see a dark spot are de-laminating but all of the fiberglass around it seems pretty solid. SHould I attack this from the indise and the outside or is just and outside repair sufficient? I have some 1708 biaxial, but that is probably overkill. What weight cloth do should I use? I may not have done the picture link correctly. If so I will try that again. Thanks for any advice. Image

Here's a close up.

On a boat of that age, I would probably just pry out / grind out any of the loose foam/glass from the damaged area and then mix up a batch of thickened resin and use a plastic squeegee to fill in the void (where the foam was). After the "filler" material is cured, laminate a couple of layers of 8oz glass over it, fair it, and paint it. That assumes that the inside layer of glass is still intact. If it isn't, then you would also need to repair the inner skin. But my guess from the pictures is that the inside skin is probably ok.

Thanks, SRM. I will try that.

Yeah, I figured they hit it with something. I think if they would have used some glass in the original fix it would have held up fine, but they just used resin only.

Rick Buchanan did an illustrated article in the May/June 2008 Hotline (Vol 37 No.3) on pages 16 & 17 called Blind Hole Repair

Thanks, for the article, Tim. I am going to be down your way in a couple weeks. Visiting family in Lakeland, but will be staying in Dunedin a couple of days also.

Fixed! I mixed up some peanut butter with epoxy and cabosil to fill the depression. That is the white underneath the glass. I then put 2 layers of 9 ounce cloth tape. I could only find 4" wide tape locally.

Then faired with peanut butter mixture of epoxy and micro balloons. This pic is after sanding.

I am going to let it cure for a week and paint it with Krylon spray paint for now. I know the paint won't match exactly but it is sailing time so I will paint it with that for now to protect it and maybe repaint the hulls next spring.
