Hello everyone. I just bought my first Hobie. It's a 1976 16' flamer. It's in great shape for a 42 year old boat one upper gudgeon is torn out so i plan to replace both sides with one piece cast aluminum ones. I'll have a lot of question in the future, but my first one is how to clean the white oxidation on my black anodized mast and boom without damaging them. I have a can of Mothers aluminum and mag rim polish. Is this ok or should i use something different ? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, John |

Aluminum oxide should be pretty powdery and easy to remove. To be honest, unless its a major cosmetic issue as in you plan to repaint the mast or there is pitting, I'd let it be and focus on making sure that luff track is clear and easy to raise you mainsail. "Cleaning" you mast can be done with a good medium pressure water spray head and a small scrub brush. Add a non-corrosive cleaner for stuck on bird poop and you should be good. Just a word to the wise, don't spend more time getting your boat "perfect" than sailing it, especially if its already well seasoned. |

I have no experience with it, but do a search for Penetrol on these forums. It has been suggested for cleaning and/or improving the looks of black anodized parts. |
