Post subject:  EPO 2 rudder restoration

I have just purchased some used EPO 2 rudders from a friend, but had some concerns when i saw that some of the glass was chipping away, but there isn’t any significant damage to the rudders. Does anyone know of a good way to lay new glasss on these rudders or refurbish them to bring back a more glossy finish?

There were three versions of the EPO 2 rudder - carbon, kevlar, and fiberglass (with white gelcoat). Which ones do you have?

I think it is carbon Kevlar or maybe just carbon. It’s a darker black color when compared to the other EPO 2 rudders

Grind back all the loose/flaking epoxy. Sand all the damaged areas with 80-100 grit paper. Wipe with acetone. Mix up a batch of epoxy resin and paint it on to seal all the exposed fibers (you will have to do one side of the rudder at a time). After the epoxy cures, sand to the desired finish (I would say minimum 600 grit wet sand paper). Keep the rudder blades out of the sun when not being used.
