Hey all! Pretty new to Hobies and sailing in general. I bought an old H16 a few weeks back. It’s a combo of 3+ different model years. I’ve taken her out a half dozen times now and have been learning a ton and having a blast doing it! I just found a set of never used, official Hobie sails for $500 on Craigslist. I picked them up immediately. I was pretty stoked on the deal so was a little hasty in checking them out before handing over cash. After getting them home, I noticed the jib is lacking batten pockets. I’m pretty sure it is a Hobie 16 furling jib. I’ll eventually get the furling kit, but I was wondering if it’s possible to run the the furling jib without the furling kit for now? Would raise/lower like the standard jib. Sail geometry is a little off, the furling jib luff is almost a foot longer than the standard jib. I understand I may sacrifice some power without the battens, but I’m fine with that. I’d be happy to trade some speed for no hangups. Thanks for the wealth of information!!! Cheers! -Nick |

I don’t see why you won’t be able to rig it like a normal jib, but one problem I can foresee is that the jib is going to get flogged to death sitting on the beach without battens or the ability to furl. I would recommend getting a quick shackle for the clew blocks so when you get to the beach you can disconnect the clew and wrap the jib around the forestay (basically furl without a furler). sm |
