My wife and I are looking to spend more of our Winters in Florida in the coming years. We enjoy launching our '81 Hobie 16 from the beach (in New Jersey) and have a travel trailer we'll be using over the Winter months. Does anyone have suggestions about where folks are sailing Hobies from the beach in Florida? We've looked at the Keys, but the campgrounds down there are really expensive. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Fair winds!

I am heading down there (Key Largo) tomorrow for a week from Michigan, and would love to go sailing on a Hobie 16, if anyone down there is looking for crew, or willing to rent out their boat for a day, let me know!

Most of the east coast beaches are a problem in that the local municipalities (who pay for life guards) do NOT want water craft in the same space as swimmers.
Hillsboro and Deerfield come to mind.
Delray Beach is different, the privateers go to the north end, Chuck's rental and the wind surfer guys are at the south end.
I think you can still launch at the very south end of the Lauderdale beach, then park in the paid parking lot.
Anyone with local knowledge?

In East Central Florida I’m pretty sure you can trailer, park, and launch directly off Daytona, Ponce, and New Smyrna Beaches.

Caveat- I have personally launched my Tandem Island from New Smyrna on several occasions but no experience at other locations.

On the Gulf side of Florida, we use the Dunedin Causeway (which goes out to Honeymoon Island, just north of Clearwater Beach, FL).

I also use the Dunedin causeway. It is good because you can stay in the sound if you want to be in protected waters or in just a couple minutes you can be out in the Gulf.
