Hi Guys! Racing days over, now modifying a H16 for comfort , simplicity and ease. (My awesome H18 "Tsunami" with sx wing's hulls were destroyed in recent hurricane but parts are good). 1. Wanting to convert my H18- roller furler to the 16 to save money over a full kit. Searched a lot on here and got info but still need advice. Can you help me with what parts I need without buying a whole kit? Matt, Here are your words from a similar post:: Instructions: https://static.hobiecat.com/item_attach ... 007z52.pdf Note: If modifying a full batten jib for furler use, the luff wire is shorter than the rolling furler version and will require replacement luff wire or a custom pigtail length. 2. I have a great local sail maker nearby, here in Cocoa Florida named Scott Morgan, so want him to recut existing 16 jib for furling because it's that beautiful matching light blue with rainbow stripes to the main, and still crisp! I understand he will need to "cut the curve out of the back side of jib so it won't flap around." , Someone said here. Will have him add UV strip for furling and a bigger window on jib, also main (because I am converting wings from the 18 to the 16 too) . Idea: would it be a good idea to add short angled up battens along the leech, like my Catalina 14.2 Expo roller furling main has, to also help reduce flapping and have better pointing? Any other info would be great so I can going on this! Just rebuilt my hurricane destroyed big sailboat ramp, excited to get out there. Thanks!!! |

You need thimble loops on the outer ends. Bridle for Hobie furler Fork and Thimble 1/8 1x19 (3' 6 3/4") 52812011 1.00 WIRE SPORT FORESTAY UPR You have the upper pigtail with swivel from the 18? Pigtail Thimble both ends wI swivel 5/32 1 x19 (10 3/8")* * = Thimble to thimble (does not include the swivel) The short vertical battens might work on the leech. Not sure. |

this may help with the cut of the jib... i used my 16 jib the first year without cutting it down ...it flapped quite a bit ... i cut it down like this... https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ur7yi ... mdOzOjuFQH and it works quite well... i live on the beach so it is handy not having to deal with the jib every time i sail... Fantastic Don, much appreciated, that will be great! Also I'm thinking of cutting the foot of the main for more boom to noggin clearance and so my old joints don't have to crawl as low from wing to wing. Studying the idea with Morgan Sails of cutting the foot of the sail at about a 20 degree angle upwards from the tack to the clew with a new rope insert and rebuilt clew reinforcement. I know this will create the need to lengthen the boom a little to maintain outhaul, and I have a great aluminum fabricator to help with that. We have plenty of wind in Brevard Florida on the Indian River, so I'm pretty sure I can still fly a hull. If not maybe we can add some of the lost square footage like a squaretop lWildcat sail. I guess this is going to be a built for comfort H16 Sport Cruiser in the end, with wings, higher boom, furling jib and big sail windows! Your help and this forum is super!!! Thanks! Rambo |

Hey can anyone who has a "Re-Cut" or Purchased Furling Jib on a Hobie 16 give me the Luff Length? (I would just buy one, but want to keep my Ocean Blue color scheme, since my original sails are still crisp and in great condition) Also Don, if still convenient, yes... I could really use an updated pic of your setup now, with what you think is an 18 pigtail... Much Appreciated!!! Rambo |
