Hello. I had my old Hobie 16 mast stolen, with boom and sails. I got a second mast, and want to use the sails from my 16 foot daysailer. These sails are shorter, by 3 feet. Should I cut the mast shorter, or is it ok to fly them high on the cat? |

Maybe you could rig something to extend the halyard at the sail end. That way you could still use the hook and downhaul. Why butcher your boat? Dave |

Do yourself a favor and pick up a used set of Hobie 16 sails (just saw a set listed on thebeachcats for $200). Trying to use a set of sails from another boat (especially a monohull daysailor) is just going to be a disaster. Using a sail without full battens on a boat that is capable of sailing much faster than the boat the sail was originally designed for is going to cause all kinds of handling issues in anything other than a light breeze. Definitely don’t cut your mast. sm |
