Timely, I'm needing to do this too. Cable is in perfect condition. Sheave is gone. They are not rebuildable. I'm going to drill the piece off and install one with removable beckets.

Is the clamp required to hold the halyard in place when the sail is up? If not you can splice wire into rope. You just splice the inner first then the outer.

The transition (maybe what you call the clamp) is higher profile and catches under a hook when sail is hoisted, so that feature will have to be duplicated if you try a home-made solution. Purchasing a new one would be better. If you do, hang on to the shackle. The pin is supposed to be captive, but my pin fell out recently and I could not find the old shackle. The local Hobie dealer had a shackle and we used a grinder to remove the flare on the pin. I preferred to buy just a pin, but could not determine the size of the pin and Hobie says they are not available outside of the shackle - which I find hard to believe.

Thanks for the info ... i have a new one installed and am being more careful when locking the main in the halyard hook.. can't afford the 70 or 80 dollars ... trying to use better technique ,,,,
