Our sailing club has three well used Hobie 16's that are used by the membership at large and especially hard by the kids at sailing camp. The kids are asked to do righting drills at the camp and then they soon decide it's really fun to flip the 16's, so the mastheads get a serious workout.
The two boats with the older all aluminum single sheave mast head have no issues holding the Hobie baby bobs on them, but the thin metal cap that forms the masthead on the one comptip mast, is riveted to the thin shell of composite material that forms the outer shell of the comptip and those rivets have pulled out several times now.
Has anyone already solved this problem...I know something needs to be done to spread the load of the impact on the water out over a greater amount of surface, and I am thinking of adding sheet metal strips down the side of the mast to do that. I am also considering adapting a rod to the bob and using eyestraps to rivet a 5/8" aluminum shaft to the side of the mast like is done with the big rotating bobs on the larger boats, but the baby bob attached like that won't rotate like the larger bob, so that might load the shaft hard when the bob hits the water.
Has anyone already solved this problem. I'm open to suggestions!!!!

The main up and tensioned with downhaul should be holding the head on tightly. Maybe some extra glass around the inside would help?

I'd make or buy 2 T brackets bolt them to the bob and rivet to the mast.
