Post subject:  Hobie 16 Rudder Cam Question - Is This a Pin or Rivet?
I need to replace my rudder locking cam, and am wondering what is securing the old one. Is this a one-piece SS rivet (with an inverted cone-shaped head), or a SS bushing with a straight, hollow pin inside it?

If it is the latter, I can hammer it out, but if it is the former, I will need to drill it. I wire brushed it, but still cannot entirely tell. There appear to be two seams -- one outside, and the other inside where a bushing would end and a hollow pin would begin.

This is a 1985 Hobie 16. I am sure someone must have seen this before...

I just had to do this on a Getaway. Both ends are flared so you need to drill one of the ends out. Just be careful not to enlarge the hole. Hobie sells replacement kits with the cams and sister pins.

What he said. I just did this on a H16. Just be careful you do not enlarge the hole. The new sister screws will make this much easier in the future to switch out a cam.

I used a 1/4 inch drill bit on the Getaway but I'm not sure if the H16 and Getaway pins are the same size. The part numbers in the catalog are different.

Don't run the drill bit all the way through, or the hole might end up being enlarged too much. I reground the end of a twist drill bit to cut the heads off.

Barring that, use a sharp Cobalt bit, and just cut a seat for a pin punch, without cutting the head completely off the rivet. Seat the pin punch in the hole, and give it a tap. You want the pin punch to do the final parting of the head, and rivet barrel, but you don't want to have to hit it too hard. I use the same procedure for removing any other rivet on the boats.

I still have the dies for setting those rivets that I never used. Once you take that out, there is no sense in doing anything but putting sister screws back in.
