Recently purchased an '84 H16, and while setting it up, I did a little research on the anchor pins & bars, and was a little concerned that the 1st and 2nd generation pins are significantly weaker than the newer rolled versions. I'm going to be ordering some new parts in the next month or two, but for the time being, I've got two sets I could use. One being from a '72, and the ones on the boat are '84. I can't seem to find any info that states for sure which pin is the weakest pin. From what I have read, there were more problems with the 2nd version, which has the threads cut, but stop short of the shoulder. Is this true? Trying to decide if I should swap to the older pins until the next batch of parts get here. |

The issue was very inconsistent over the years. No way to tell you. The rolled thread ones were better, but they were still stamped to flatten the heads and some of these have failed. Understand that the rate of failure is very low compared to the number of boats built. Some may have been from sloppy rigs while stored on the beach and the pins got impact loads repeatedly as the mast moves around. The current pin now has a machined head and is as bulletproof as I can imagine. They seemed to get visible cracks before failure, so inspection is key. |
