Post subject: | Broken Halyards |
I have broken four halyards on three different boats (16 and Getaway) and I can't figure out the problem. After hooking the wire I have been cleating the remaining halyard loosely. My theory was that a tight halyard might allow the wire to move around in the fork at the mast head and chafe. But the halyards are breaking somwhere around the sheaves. Actually one broke right where the wire meets the brass "cap." My guess now is chafing by the sheave housing or maybe the screws that mount the bob? I'm going to try to rebuild the last halyard to figure out exactly where it broke. Has this happened to anyone else? What about oversized wire, a chafe guard or some other custom fix? |

Check the lock fork. Maybe a sharp edge? |
