I have old style jib travelers on my 75 Hobie 16. I've been sailing solo. I just move them out as the wind gets stronger since I figure I don't need the jib hauled in tight in higher winds. Is there any big reason I need to be able to adjust them in between tacking? I can always move them when I tack if the wind has changed. |

Sounds like you are sailing for fun not competing. If that is the case just save the money for more gas to get to your favorite sailing spot and don't worry about it. ![]() |

I agree, for fun sailing remote jib travelers are probably not a priority. However, some of those very old jib systems were quite difficult to uncleat. Being able to release the jib sheet quickly and dependably is a good feature to have regardless of whether you’re racing or just fun sailing. So if the existing cleats are difficult to operate, an upgrade may still be worth considering. sm |

I agree with srm that the early style cleats are difficult to use, especially with unseasoned crew. There have been a few times we get a strange wind gust (inland lake) and I hear BAM BAM BAM BAM as my crew is still trying to release the cleat after 4 attempts as the boat goes over. My 17 has the upward style release cleats, and it is way easier to tack with. But solo sailing, we hardly mess with the jib, so save the cash and buy some post sail beers! |
