Post subject:  A brand new (old) sail...can you help identify it?

First, thanks to everybody on this forum, I've learned much here but this is my first post. I sail an '85 H16 with very used Blue Hawaii sails but recently came to own a set of sails that were purchased long ago, stored and never used or even opened from what I can tell. The fantastic chart seen many times on these forums calls them #18, which were introduced in 1975. Does anybody know what they're called? Sail number is 46550, which I think puts them in the late 1970's but I understand its very difficult to date sails on number alone. Just in case the pics don't work, the jib is solid dark blue and the main is white with light and dark blue stripes at the very top of the sail. Numbers are large and blue. I consider myself very lucky to have these, it was like opening a time capsule! I'm also looking forward to being able to point again :D

Thanks!

Sorry for failing to have easily viewed pics, here is another attempt. I have not hoisted them for lack of wind here in North Carolina. But on further inspection they certainly have never been used. Any idea what they're called (besides '#18'), and guesses as to when made? Thanks so much for your help!

Well, apparently that didn't work either. I tried copy and paste to view the pics but it didn't work for me.

HobieMarty, thanks for trying. I'm going to give it one more shot. I apologize for the newbie who doesn't even know how to do simple things on this board. I tried the 'Img' button 2 different ways, now trying URL. The pics are on Google Drive, with public sharing on. If anybody has any tips, please let me know...have searched for it and tried both methods I found.

Those look really nice. According to the guide, they were from 1975 and I didn't see a name for them. They are nice looking though.

Thanks Marty! I checked the pattern guide again and noticed two of these in one of the fleet pics, so guessing not all that rare, just no name. Looks like wind here on Lake Norman on Wed...so will try em out soon! They have waited patiently for over 40 years to lift a hull, happy to oblige.

New sails from the 70's had first sail today...it was awesome! For any Hobie historians out there, pattern #18 was called 'BSR' based on the inspection sticker that was still taped to the main. What a time capsule! And these things lifted a hull today after waiting 40+ years to do so.

You should send that pic to Joe at joyrider tv to be featured in “how do you get yours there” with that launch setup you have.

I just watched it. Cool. Are you going to sell your Blue Hawaii sails? I have the same hull color and sails, but mine are beat.

Thanks! Although my BH sails are pretty beat too, my daughter would never forgive me for selling the ‘rainbow sails’, ha. Also I think they came with the boat so I think I’ll keep em together. Will be on the lookout for you though, lots of 80s boats around here. Love that hull color. When I got the boat they were so chalked up it looked grey, amazing what some wet sanding does for old gel coat. When was yours made?

Mine is an ‘83. Unfortunately one of the previous owners painted the hulls on mine. Still blue but I wish it was the original gel coat and not paint. I have thought about sanding all of the paint off to get it back to the gel coat, but then I think about how much work that would be and go sailing instead. I totally understand about keeping the sails. I am always on the lookout for blue Hawaiians, but its almost impossible to find ones in good shape. I definitely love all the old sail colors vs. the new ones. BTW my boat is featured in episode 35.

Hey I remember watching Show Us Your Cat and seeing the name Deez Knots, and remember thinking it was funny and clever. My boat was in episode #2 and is the thumbnail for the video.

I am interested in your ramp set up, tell us more about that!!! We have a place at a lake where my boat is stored and we have really high sea walls, have just had a new pier built and it is closer to the water than the old pier and doesn't have rails and is floored with tech deck composite planks. I am wanting to build something like you have in order to get the boat up onto the pier.

Marty just rewatched episode 2... what an amazing boat. Those 84 Nationals sails are fantastic! I’ll take some more pics of the launch this weekend, hope it helps. It’s nothing fancy but we get about an 8 ft level differential on our lake and it does the job. I’ll start a new thread once I get the pics; thanks for the interest!
