Post subject:  Mast base repair (mast is damaged at its base)

Hello everyone!

So I have a Hobie 16 form 1985' its a little worse for wear but in good shape overall, When I was putting up the mast today the base caught and the force of pivoting the mast cause the base and its rivots to sheer through the aluminum mast. So the base is off the mast with the rivots attached and there are now two cuts through the mast base where the rivots dragged through.. How should I repair this? should I cut the 2 cm off the base of the mast where the cuts are, and then re drill holes for new rivots or just drill new holes for new rivots in a different spot. My only concern is that the metal is then left torn and weak. Another idea would be to do some type of weld so that it stays put and does not damage the aluminum any more.. But i am definitely not an expert at welding and there are steel and aluminum components to deal with..

Any help or if you know someone who can help me repair this, that would be great!

Thank you! :D

Drill 4 new holes. New Rivets (Stainless).

Do not trim the length. You can fill the torn area with a black silicone for cosmetics.

So is that 4 holes in just the mast and then 4 matching ones in the mast base? So 2 on each side on either side of the cut section, or 4 total holes so one new hole on each side and a new hole in the mast base on each side

Thank you! So drill two holes on either side of the torn area on both sides of the mast and mast base?

Spread out a bit. More evenly around the base.

You insert the base and drill the holes through the mast and casting at one time.
