I built a righting pole for my Hobie 16. I know this has been discussed many times before but I thought I may help someone out refreshing the topic. https://youtu.be/DPGWqVNe4k0 I got my material build list from another post on here but I can't seem to locate it. 1 1/2" aluminum tube or wood dowel roughly 7'6" (width of the pylons) 4 - 2x4's cut at 8" 4 - 1/2" plywood cut 8x10" Stainless bolts to secure pole to 2x4 blocks 1 1/2" screws to screw plywood to 2x4's Contact cement and outdoor carpet for traction Instead of using 1 1/2" aluminum tube I used a 1 1/2" wooden dowel and fiber-glassed over it. I tried to get away with 1/4" rope. but found 1/2" rope was required or the stretch was too great. I've been going solo and there aren't many boats around for assistance. I have SeaTow but they can take up to 2-3 hours. Also I didn't feel confident in the righting bag system since it seems like there is a technique required to get it to work. This system seems to get the job done and give me that extra leverage. Deployment is easy, un-bungie both ends of the stick. Toss the lines over the top hull each side of the pylon and secure with carabiner clips. Place the bottom of the righting pole into the groove on the bottom the hull. Walk out slowly and flip it back over. |

Awesome thanks! Can you share pics of how you attach and deploy? |

Here is the video I based mine off of. He’s got a hobie 18 so instead of placing the base ontop of the daggerboard I put mine into the lip of the hull. https://youtu.be/jTRS5pTZGV4 For storage and easy deployment I have it bungee corded to the front of the trampoline. Seems to stay high and dry even when flying a hull |

Nice, thanks for sharing. I am trying to figure out how to make a combo righting pole and oar for when the wind is too much...or too little. I think it comes down to a design like yours with thinner, stronger materials. Or a detachable paddle section. |

Yeah I think. you could make 1 end a paddle instead of a box like I did. The paddle end could easily fit under the hull lip and have the same effect. Here is a pic of me flying the hull and you can see how I mounted it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/UnZgsuQBwpxt8JtNA |

When Dave, guy in video with the 18, and I came up with the original righting stick, we used the aluminum pole, worried that a wooden one could snap. But a lot of people are now carrying 2x4's. This one was a 2x6 cut down to give the sailor more width to walk up, sprayed with traction grip on one side. ![]() |

I’ve put righting pole together using a combination of what’s in this thread, I’ve also added an extension piece. Seems to work well. Check it out https://youtu.be/DPGWqVNe4k0 |

Check it out https://youtu.be/DPGWqVNe4k0 Looks good. On the water you will want to be closer to the front cross bar, that's the center point for righting the boat. Where you are at now, the bows will lift first and the boat will start to rotate on the water as it comes up and you will most likely fall off the stick. You'll love it once you get it sorted out. |

Recommend making the righting pole longer. You can fasten it to bottom of tramp on either side and let extra hang out front. |
