i guess I'm just wondering if the original coat is preferable because it's smoother than replacement paint could ever be or is that silly?

thanks!

I dont think its going to make much difference but it might be cool to use one of those Nano technology paints that repels water to reduce water friction even more.

You just want a good barrier to keep water from seeping into the underlaying fiberglass and causing delamination.

Make sure you find a paint that adheres well to gelcoat.

I see. thanks . Looking to purchase a boat right now as I bought a lemon and wondering if repainted hulls matter at all besides masking cracks etc.

Read up on this Forum why no one recommends that Hobie's are "painted".
Rather, buff the gelcoat OR sand down and re-gelcoat the hulls.

There are also references in this Forum for wet-sanding chalky coloured hulls, then buffing, waxing and polishing.
Mostly, you'll need elbow grease.

then you can have fun.

Jerome of Surf City Catamaran made a great video in 2007: Hobie Catamaran Oxidation Removal.
