Post subject: | Transom Crack Repair |
I'm a fairly new owner of an H16 which I was told has hulls from around 1975. A previous owner had painted the hulls, and I soon found damage hiding underneath the paint. I started digging in to a crack on the transom corner. It seems there is some kind of brown resin or filler between the transom wood board and the outer layer of glass. Is this expected of the original construction? This material has several bubbles and cracks and doesn't seem to be bonded to the wood well at all. Perhaps, I have gone too far in grinding in search of good structure build back up on. Anyone recognize the brown resin/filler between the glass and wood? Steps to completing the transom repair are much appreciated! ![]() ![]() Thanks, Eric |

Ended up finishing this up on 10/4. Just cleaned it up, filled with glass and chopped fiber and then also tried some microbeads mixed with polyester resin. Had a little learning curve getting the resin to cure in my cold backyard. Took my best shot at gel coat. Ugly but not too bad. Sorry, haven't figured out how to control image size...yet. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Image size is set by resolution. Reduce image resolution to reduce image size. I like your big pics. Nice work on the repair. If you have issues reinstalling the rudder gudgeons you can drill and tap out the holes to the next larger size. |

Next time you do a repair like that leave the gudgeon screws in and work them in and out as the resin hardens it will make them very easy to reseat |
