Hi Hobie experts. Can you help. I am new to Hobie's but not to catamarans or other sail boats and just spent three months renovating a Hobie 16. But after one sail we were hit with an overnight squall which flipped the boat. The mast is flexed, one rudder blade snapped, and on two of the pylons there are some cracks (see pics). I have a spare rudder blade but questions are: 1. Is the flexed mast OK to persuade back into a straight line, or is the bend too much. If I do, will it be significantly weakened? 2. Are the cracks at the pylon bases indicative of the pylons being damaged at their insertion points inside the hull, or can I just grind out the cracks, glass and re-paint? I tried jiggling the hulls but the rigidity does not seem to be any difference than before the flip. Your thoughts https://martinskeltonnyc.tumblr.com/pos ... 9490716672 |

My guess is the mast is done. You could certainly try to straighten it (no harm in trying), but I think the risk of kinking it or the bend returning is pretty high. For the hull crack, I think you need to do some grinding to see how bad those cracks are, but it should be repairable. I would also have one person lift one of the bows while someone else looks at the crack to see if it opens or closes as the frame twists. sm |

Going to try the mast straightening see what happens. |
