| Post subject: | H16 mast base replacement |
Recently purchased a project '85 H16. The mast base has a broken flange that allows the mast base to be stepped into the cup holder on tramp crossbar using step link. The previous owner provided a new one with the deal. Two questions,... does a new mast base differ from old? Wondering about compatibility issues. Secondly,... and more importantly, .. after drilling out the old rivets from the mast and removing broken base, does the new base need a sealant? Unlike the comp-tip replacement on last years '89 H14 (Jaws) project needing an epoxy and foam plug to seal out water, I'm thinking just a sealant would do. Let me know, and thanks! |

Thanks for the reply. The rivets for the base should be the same size and type as the ones used for the mast tang I replaced on the H14. What does anyone think? I've seen some rivets that claim to not need casings. Thoughts on there use here? Also, can anyone tell me if the rivets on the corner pieces of the tramp frame are the same as ones used elsewhere such as on the mast? |

Hobie has a parts guide that includes the part numbers for all the rivets on the H16. If the part numbers match, there the same. The guide also tells you if you need the rivet caps. Good luck. Daniel |

Some shots of the loose rivets and base. This is the '85 H16 as it sat in the sellers yard. Any thought on removing all the pond water organic staining? I've use Starbrite gel remover with some fair results, ( 7 times ) but there is a small amount of all over light staining remaining on the hulls.

flatlander has more experience than I, but I thought for sure both the new step and base are beefier and not necessarily compatible with older ones. Might want to check further before proceeding. Oxalic acid (Barkeeper's Friend is cheap) does a good job on tsannin stains. |

To remove stains use polishing compound. If it is too slow use rubbing compound and finish with polishing compound. |

Goof Off's RustAid for Outdoors, mixed about 3 parts water to 1 part RustAid in a 1 gallon plastic pump sprayer will remove all the organic stains (fumic, humic and tannic acid brown stains). No need to rub, just spray on wait a few minutes and then rinse off with a hose. After you get your hulls as white as possible, then you should seal the gelcoat with a wax (like ZEP "wet look floor polish") to keep future organic stains from attaching to your porous gelcoat. The nice thing about ZEP is you can wipe the liquid on with a rag and can put multiple coats on without the need to buff it. About once or twice a year, I do a bottom job on my 84H16 hulls. First I strip any stains, etc. off using Outdoor Bleach and Rust Aid in a sprayer to get the hulls as clean and white as possible. I use FGCI's pre-mixed "Misty White" unwaxed gelcoat, mixing about 2 oz at a time to do the bottom job and touch up any gelcoat knicks, etc on the hulls. I can do about 4 coats of gelcoat on the bottoms of my hulls and 7 coats of ZEP all over the hulls in an eight hour period (start each new gelcoat or Zep coat every 30 minutes). The ZEP also seals the unwaxed gelcoat so it can properly cure.
